چکیده

Ninhydrin reacts with various nitrogen-containing compounds, including some that are released from a body during decomposition. Previous research has shown that ninhydrin can be used to identify gravesoils, however, its potential value in death scene reconstruction has not been previously demonstrated. To explore this possibility, the concentration of ninhydrin-reactive nitrogen (NRN) was measured in soil associated with a scavenged death scene where the remains had been scattered. Levels of NRN in the decomposition area were 7 to 13 times higher than in other areas of the scene (under lower body, upper limb, manure and fecal matter, scalp) after more than a four-month postmortem interval. The ability to reconstruct the scene was enhanced, as this measure identif ied the most probable location of death and decomposition prior to disturbance.

Using ninhydrin to detect gravesoil.

Some death scene investigations commence without knowledge of the location of the body and/or decomposition site. In these cases, it is necessary to locate the remains or the site where the body decomposed prior to movement. We hypothesized that the burial of a mammalian cadaver will result in the release of ninhydrin reactive nitrogen (NRN) into associated soil and that this reaction might hav...

Large-scale outdoor 3D reconstruction on a mobile device

This paper presents an approach for reconstructing large-scale outdoor scenes through monocular motion stereo at interactive frame rates on a modern mobile device (Google Project Tango Development Kit Tablet). The device’s fisheye camera enables a user to reconstruct large scenes in only a few minutes by simply walking through the scene. We utilize the device’s GPU to compute depth maps via pla...

Ninhydrin-based Forensic Investigations I. Fingerprints

Ninhydrin reagents are currently used for amino acid determination. However, ninhydrin reacts with amino groups of amino acids and other components of palmar sweat to develop Ruheman’s purple. Therefore, it was used on a large scale to fingerprint development. Another recent application of ninhydrin is related to trace cyanide detection and determination. However, this simple compound may have ...

Ninhydrin-based Forensic Investigations: Ii. Cyanide Analytical Toxicology

Recently, a novel ninhydrin reaction with cyanide has opened new ways to detect this poison in the body fluids and the environmental samples. Mainly, detection of cyanide with ninhydrin at a crime scene could be of prime interest for forensic investigators. Besides, the reaction conditions are very common, except the need to avoid oxygen and oxidizers. The ninhydrin-based assay proved to be hig...

Insects and associated arthropods analyzed during medicolegal death investigations in Harris County, Texas, USA: January 2013- April 2016

The application of insect and arthropod information to medicolegal death investigations is one of the more exacting applications of entomology. Historically limited to homicide investigations, the integration of full time forensic entomology services to the medical examiner's office in Harris County has opened up the opportunity to apply entomology to a wide variety of manner of death classific...
